THE GLOBAL DIFFUSION OF HINDUS AND TEMPLE-BUILDING IN MODERN TIMES
On 11 June 2005, Dr. Carolyn Prorok, Professor of Geography, Slippery Rock University, Pennsylvania, USA presented an illustrated and interactive lecture on “The global diffusion of Hindus and temple-building in modern times.”
In this lecture Dr. Prorok discussed the history, historical geography, and the many cultural geographic patterns of the Hindu diaspora and the sacred landscapes they have created. Following the lecture, there was a very involved and interesting question-and-answer session.
A brief biography of Dr. Prorok
Dr. Carolyn Prorok received her PhD in geography from Louisiana State University (1988), MA from the University of Pittsburgh (1982), and her B.S. from Slippery Rock University (1978).
She has received many awards for her research and teaching,the President’s Award for Scholarly & Creative Achievement from the President of her University in April 2005. She is much-traveled and has published extensively (numerous books, book chapters, reviews, over 30 peer-reviewed scholarly articles in reputed academic journals, etc.).
Her specialties include geographic education, Asia, geography of religions particularly Hinduism, the Hindu diaspora (especially in the Caribbean), and feminist geographies.
Dr. Prorok is currently also Trustee, Dharani USA –– a sister organization to The Dharani Trust, Bangalore.
