The Indian Institute of Geographical Studies (TIIGS) believes that Geography is a vital tool in developing skills which will help people become activism-oriented. Geography will languish as a bookish subject useful at best to pass courses and may be memorize some disjointed factoids if it does not help students (and others) become activists at some level for the betterment of the society in which they live.
In order that Geography’s power be realized in very practical ways, TIIGS tries to work with a wide range of audiences including students, teachers, researchers, organizations, and civil society at large. It endeavors to reach them in different ways.
TIIGS is endeavoring to develop a Geography Center with adequate facilities (personnel, infrastructure, and premises) to offer its various services. In many ways the opening up of these facilities will greatly help us in developing and delivering our services. This part of TIIGS is a high-priority area for solicitation of funds and other resources.
- The Consultation Facility will provide capacity-building services to organizations, especially NGOs, embarking upon projects where a geographical framework can be used to better formulate, design, implement, and report them.
- The Training Center will house a network of compact, high-end computers with high-speed broadband connections and graphics capabilities. This Center will provide the facilities necessary for ICT-enabled learning for students, teachers, researchers, and NGOs. Included here will be open-source GIS, data sets, open-access data sharing facilities, production of Geography education materials for online and offline dissemination.
- A Geography Residency Program will soon be available for researchers from India and abroad. A comfortable living and working space with easy access to most major urban amenities and to broadband services. This facility will be especially useful for graduate students and researchers wishing to engage in research while stationed in Bangalore.
