How Earth Made Us

Part 5

The Human Planet

Presented by Dr. Iain Stewart, Geologist

(Duration: 1 hour)

Human beings were at the “mercy” of nature during earlier times. Now, we have ourselves become a major force of nature. We are able to change so many things on Earth and re-shape many things in nature. But how powerful are we, really?

In this episode Dr Stewart shows us how human beings have influenced the planet we live on: Earth. He shows us examples of where we have been able to resist nature’s forces and where we are not powerful! Our impact on Earth has not always been “bad.” We have impressive power, but not enough control over it. Human power to change Earth’s surface is so great that we now live in the “anthropocene” age (epoch of the human).

How Earth Made Us

Part 3

Wind

Presented by Dr. Iain Stewart, Geologist

(Documentary duration: 1 hour)

Earth breathes just as we do. The atmosphere surrounding Earth is always moving. It carries various gases, moisture, heat, soil, living things … including humans from place to place. Wind has helped to shape the stories of civilizations … where we have lived, where we took people, how we survived, etc. It is the life-breath of the planet. Like many other things, it can also be deadly!

In this episode we go on a journey of exploration of how wind has been crucial to human life on Earth. The journey is full of surprising connections! You will never again see geography the same way.

Join us in exploring this vital resource. We will also look at wind’s role in our own daily lives and how our culture views wind.

And if you have an atlas you can carry easily, bring it with you.

Part 2

Water

Presented by Dr. Iain Stewart, Geologist

(Documentary duration: 1 hour)

Earth is called “The Blue Planet” because so much of its surface is covered with water, but most of the water (97%) is not directly useful to us. Only 3% is fresh water that we can drink and use for growing crops. This 3% is not found everywhere. Even where it is found, we can’t always reach it. So, there is very little fresh water that we can actually use. Availability of fresh water has influenced how human history has unfolded.

In this episode we go on a journey of exploration of how water has been crucial to life on Earth. The journey is full of surprising connections! Join us in exploring this vital resource, one of the ‘five elements.’ We will also look at water’s role in our own lives and how our culture views water.

How Earth Made Us

Part 1 – Deep Earth

Presented by Dr. Iain Stewart, Geologist

Human life is intimately connected to Earth. There is a very interesting connection between Earth’s hot interior and where civilizations were born, grew, and vanished. Earth is plentiful, but also powerful. No wonder many cultures respect Earth … and on one ever “conquers” Earth!

So, where did humans find Earth’s riches and Earth’s awesome power that they should fear?
